Take Permits
If a Western Joshua Tree is present on your property and may be impacted by development or other activity, you are required to obtain a take permit from CDFW before beginning work.
Permit Types
1. Hazard Management Permits
- For removing dead trees or trimming limbs that pose an immediate threat to public safety or structures.
- These permits are free and processed directly by CDFW.
2. Incidental Take Permits (ITPs)
- Required when trees may be impacted due to development, such as residential construction, grading, or public infrastructure.
- Applicants must complete a tree census, provide project plans, and pay mitigation fees to CDFW.
In Short:
- Western Joshua Trees are protected.
- Do not remove, relocate, or trim a tree without prior approval.
- Take permits must be obtained from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
- Permit type and process depend on whether your activity is for hazard removal or development.
