Healthy Hesperia

What is a Healthy Community?
The concept of a healthy community is based on the recognition that what determines health has little to do with what is known as the health care system. Rather, health is determined by the availability of such basic needs as food, shelter, clean air and water, education, income, a safe physical environment, social supports, and so on. While these assumptions form the basis for the healthy community approach, each community applies the concept somewhat differently, asking itself two simple questions: what is a healthy community, and how do we get one?

A healthy community is not necessarily one that has a high health status but one that consciously seeks to improve the health of its citizens by putting health high on the social and political agenda. There are important, long-term community benefits to be gained by encouraging healthy lifestyles, including a potential decrease in the rate of childhood obesity and its negative health-related impact.

Healthy Hesperia
The City of Hesperia has placed a high priority on improving the quality of life for its citizens and is committed to developing programs, policies and opportunities that encourage healthy, active lifestyles.

As a local government agency, Hesperia is uniquely positioned to influence community design and land use policies that can play a significant role in shaping the health, well-being and quality of life of its residents. The City’s recently updated General Plan ensures the continued development of walking trails and paseos, parks, greenways, recreational facilities, streets, sidewalks, and bike paths to support and sustain active living programs for Hesperia residents.

In April 2010, the City Council adopted Resolution 2010-030 establishing Hesperia as "Healthy Hesperia" and reaffirming its commitment to promoting and developing a safe and healthy Hesperia for all residents.

Healthy Hesperia Partners
Local government alone cannot create healthier communities. What the healthy city process tries to do is to put health on the social agenda of a community, ensuring that the sectors whose actions affect the population's health and well-being accept their health role, adopt policies and develop programs that consciously seek to promote health while achieving their own objectives. It takes the combined effort of all sectors of the community, including local businesses, the voluntary sector, community organizations, schools, and health services. The creation of healthy community coalitions that bring together partners from many different sectors is a fundamental objective of the healthy city and community approach.

With the support and guidance from the City Council, the City has partnered with the Hesperia Recreation and Park District, the Hesperia Unified School District, the County of San Bernardino, and other local agencies to develop programs and opportunities that encourage healthy, active lifestyles for the citizens of Hesperia.
