LightingEnergy Efficient Light Bulb Replacement

If you are still using incandescent light bulbs, switching to energy-efficient lighting is one of the fastest ways to cut your energy bills. Lighting accounts for around 15% of an average home's electricity use, and the average household saves about $225 in energy costs per year by using LED lighting. For high-quality products with the greatest energy savings, choose bulbs that have earned the ENERGY STAR. Dishwasher

Run your dishwasher only when full and use your dishwasher's automatic energy-savings cool-dry cycle. If your dishwasher doesn't have this feature, turn it off after the final rinse and let the dishes air dry. This can reduce energy usage by 40%. Read the U.S. Department of Energy’s guide on Kitchen Appliances to learn more.

Refrigerator

Check and clean the coils regularly, especially during the summer. Also, make sure your refrigerator and freezer doors seal airtight. One way to check this is to close a dollar bill or piece of paper in the door. If it pulls out easily, your refrigerator may need a door hinge adjustment or a new gasket. Clothes Dryer

Dry lightweight and heavy clothes separately for more energy-efficient drying. Always clean the lint filter before every load. Remember to dry full loads without overloading, and you’ll use less electricity. Read the U.S. Department of Energy’s Laundry Tips to learn more.

Televisions

Be sure to activate your TV’s energy-saving features. Turn all electronics completely off when not in use. Plug your entertainment system electronics into a surge protector with a switch and reduce your TV’s light output and backlight settings to save energy. Read Plug into Savings to learn more.

Central AC

Do you know, you’ll get more out of your A/C by regularly cleaning or replacing your air conditioner's filter? Closing drapes and shades keeps direct sunlight from heating your home and lowers cooling costs. Or instead of relying on your air conditioner, use a portable or ceiling fan to circulate air. It uses less energy and costs less money. Read Energy-Efficient Air Conditioners & Home Cooling: Tips & Upgrades to learn more.

Computers & Office EquipmentSave Energy Surge Protector

Turn off your computer anytime you’ll be away longer than two hours and shut off your monitor anytime you take a break that is 20 minutes or longer. Keep all electronics connected to a surge protector and turn the protector off at night. Read Energy Efficient Computers, Home Office Equipment, and Electronics to learn more.

Electric Stove

You can also save money by using microwave and toaster ovens, slow cookers, and electric skillets instead of larger ovens and stoves. Read the U.S. Department of Energy’s guide on Kitchen Appliances to learn more.

Pool Pump

Try setting it between 4 and no more than 6 hours. Also, an older power-hungry single-speed model may be costing you more money. Save even more with a two-speed or variable-speed pool pump. Read the ENERGY STAR® guide on pool pumps to learn more.
